On premise still seen as far safer than cloud for data storage

Data security
Using on-premise storage systems is still the safest way to keep data secure, according to a recent poll of V3 readers, as cloud computing remains a cause of concern.
Despite the growing prevalence of cloud storage tools, many IT professionals clearly still feel more comfortable being able to access company data stored on their own hardware, with 61 percent choosing on premise as the safest way to store data.
By contrast, cloud computing is viewed with concern, as just six percent of readers voted the use of these technologies as the safest way to keep data secure. Hybrid solutions scored slightly better, receiving 10 percent of the votes.
Rather than worrying about the physical location of the data a few respondents – five percent – said the most important thing is to make sure data is encrypted.
The second most popular answer was to use an air gap network, which garnered 18 percent of the votes. This involves keeping important data physically disconnected from any unsecured networks in use.
The findings form part of the ongoing V3 Storage Summit in conjunction with HP and Intel, which is focusing on many of the important aspects of storage that firms must consider in order to keep their data safe and their business ticking along.
Make sure you sign up for our web seminar on Thursday at 11am, where HP's Tim Nolte, Quocirca's Clive Longbottom and Simon Liste, head of infrastructure (EMEA) for estate agent Savills, will be giving their advice on the top storage challenges for 2014 and how to overcome them.
